Counselling Essays: An Explanation of Theory and Practice
Writing essays on a counseling process is an assignment usually connected to the field of psychology. Although there are other uses for counseling, counselling essays are usually written on the process of providing professional help for an individual or a group of individuals, following a distressful event. Counselling essays can be categorized in terms of approach used into practical essays, theoretical essays, or a mix of both.
Theoretical counselling essays can be seen as the easiest in such categories, while the practical part might require a few clarifications. In that regard, the present article will attempt to explain counselling essays in terms of structure and common approaches.
Theory in Counselling Essays
The theory in counselling essays, whether it is covered through the whole essay, or only a single part of the paper, implies introducing and analyzing the theoretical foundations of counseling in literature. The theoretical foundations might include defining the main notions in counseling, including the counseling process, the main counseling theories, the skills required for counseling, etc.
The approach through which such notions will be covered in a counseling essay depends on the topic and the requirements of the assignment, e.g. comparisons between theories, supporting the need for particular skills, etc. In a counselling essay, which includes both theory and practice, the theoretical part is usually used to support particular recommendations and suggestions provided in the practical part.
Practice in Counselling Essays
The practical part in counselling essays usually implies a given case, either real or fictional, for which the counseling process should be outlined by students. In that regard, it can be stated that students’ main task is to utilize their knowledge on counseling theories to provide a plan for counseling which is appropriately supported and justified. The theory part can be covered in a separate section, or used as a support throughout the counselling essay.
