Literary Analysis Essays Writing: What to Do and What to Avoid
- One of the common mistakes of literary analysis essays is that students try to retell or summarize their primary source. You do not need that. Just remember that you are analyzing not retelling. Of course, you may reveal the subject matter of the source in your literary analysis essays. But even this is quite optional. However, you are likely to refer to your source to support your arguments.
- Another common mistake is too personal judgment. Literary analysis essays should be impartial. Thus, you cannot use first person. Moreover, it is inappropriate to state your point of view or just your arguments in literary analysis essays. You arguments should be supported by some other points of view.
- You should also know what exactly you should consider in literary analysis essays. So, you will analyze the theme and idea, the main characters, issues touched upon. You will also need to pay attention to the author’s style. Literary analysis essays presuppose evaluation of literary devices used (commonly analyzed devices are metaphors, similes, allusions, alliteration). So, while writing your literary analysis essay you will have to answer some questions. What issues does the author arise? Are these issues relevant? What conclusions does the author make? What ideas does the author try to convey? What literary means does the author use to convey those ideas?
Now you can see that there is nothing difficult in writing such assignments. You will only have to read carefully and write attentively to get a good grade.
